What Can You Use To Put Out A Sudden Fire In Your Home

By: Aydan Corkern Home |

Nothing can be more frightening than to enter a room in your home and discover that there is a fire taking place. Your first instinct might be do panic for some people, while others might be able to react calmly and efficiently. Which one do you think you would be? That would be a hard question to answer unless you have been put in that situation before.

How you react to a fire and what you use to put it out with all depends on what started the fire and where it is spreading to. If you are not aware of this fact, you do not use water to put out a grease fire. It will cause splattering and it will not normally extinguish the flames. If you have a fire going on your stove involving grease, you can use a box of baking soda or a fire extinguisher to put it out.

When you have a fire that involves something like bed linens or upholstered furniture, you can use other fabrics to smother the flames or water if you can get some to the flames. Of course, a fire extinguisher can be used too as well as baking soda if you have enough on hand. Even the dirt from a potted plant could be used if nothing else is handy.

Grabbing what ever is handy like a blanket or drapes to smother out a fire is alright if that is all you can get to, but the best item to us is the fire extinguisher. A fire extinguisher works better and faster. You also can fight the blaze from a distance away which will decrease your chances of being burned while trying to get it out. Always make sure you have at least one working fire extinguisher and if you have a large home, perhaps you should have more than one.

Never underestimate the value of smoke detectors in your home. Fire can be considered a silent killer because many times there will be no noise from a fire to alert you that it is there. A smoke alarm will detect the first signs of something burning and alert you to the fact. Remember that the batteries in a smoke alarm should be changed at least once a year and checked at least twice. This will insure that when and if a fire breaks out in your home, you will know about it as soon as possible.
