What Is Breast Cancer And How To Reduce The Chances Of Getting It?

By: Ryan Mutt Home | Health-and-Fitness | Beauty

Breast cancer is a type of cancer, which as the name suggest, occurs in the breasts of a woman. Though, there are some cases where men too have been diagnosed with this problem. Under this condition, the cells in the female breasts become infected by a malignant tumour, which may or may not spread to other parts of the body, depending on whether the cancer is Invasive or Non-Invasive, and depending on what stage of cancer the person is in.

In Invasive Cancer, the tumour spreads to the other parts of the body and has a chance of expanding very rapidly. However, in Non-Invasive cancer, the tumour remains confined to the area from where it originated.

When one talks of breast cancer, there are three main areas of the breast where the cancer can begin to develop. These are the milk ducts, the milk producing lobules and the connective tissues. Most of the cancer cases arise with the ducts being affected, and chances of the tumour arising in the connective tissues are very rare.

In the last few years, several research studies have been done to find out more about the risk factors in the development of the breast cancer. It has been found out that apart from age, gender, family history etc., factors such as menstruation beginnings and time of menopause also need to be kept in mind. Those women, who have never had any pregnancies, or have had pregnancies after the age of 35, have a very high risk of breast cancer. At the same time, women who have had their menstruation before the age of 12, or menopause after the age of 55 also have a very high risk of breast cancer.

Of course, when one talks of race, family history, age etc, these are risk factors which are beyond our control and cannot be changed. However, some things which we definitely can keep in mind to reduce our chances of getting breast cancer include following some healthy lifestyle changes. For instance, there have been some studies which have shown that high consumption of alcohol increases the chances of having breast cancer. Hence, women should make a note of how much alcohol they consume.

Next, being overweight and having a lifestyle without any kind of regular exercise also increases the chances of having breast cancer. Thus, it is very important for every human being to follow a good fitness regime which involves the consumption of healthy foods and indulging in regular exercising.

Some studies are also being done to find out if not doing breast feeding can increase the risk of breast cancer. It was found out that since breast feeding for 1-2 years reduces the number of periods just like pregnancy, the chances of breast cancer become less. But breast feeding for this long is very uncommon in United States, and so more studies are being done on the same subject.

While some say it is a myth, others believe that wearing black lingerie under the sun also increases chances of having cancer of breast.
