What Is Heat Shrink Tubing?

By: Chris Lees Home | Home-and-Family | Crafts-Hobbies

Heat shrink tubing is a very interesting application and it serves a myriad of purposes.
Although heat shrink tubing is the official title of the process, it’s informally referred to as just heat shrink most often. Anyway we digress; to give a proper explanation of how this whole heat shrink works is pretty simple. In short, it’s a tube whose diameter is lessens when heat is applied to it. This pretty much makes the name of the application appropriate when carrying out the process.

The purpose of heat shrink tubing is to also guard wires and small parts from damage. The combining and fixing wires also happens when needed. In a process like Electrical Engineering heat shrink tubing is used for connections, terminals, wires, and joints that
need to be padded.

Heat shrink tubing comes in multiple types and this is performed via the process of using a color code. This is done so when we’re dealing with connectors and wires the use of a color code makes things more identifiable. The process has received note for being used rather often when manufacturing personal computers. PCs take full advantage of heat shrink technology in order to have an overall better looking and more functional product.

This movement has led to a wave of colorful varieties of heat-shrink tubing hitting the market and the world of technology. While heat shrink is best known for being a source of insulation, we can also used it as a means to soldering joints albeit this is a rather controversial approach in the minds of those whom work as engineers.

Several noted electronic and technological colossuses are in the business of using heat shrink tubing for their various applications. It is safe to say that these heat shrink technologies have proven like most others to not only serve its original purpose but a complete variety of others all at the same time.

The material for heat shrink tubing can be a thin or dual wall based substance. For thin walled this comes into play with insulation, protection against mechanical wear. It also works very well as a sealant. Tubing substances should be made with the intention to absorb the potential damages that various chemicals can cause.

The best material due to cost effectiveness, durability and defense against the elements such as flame, fungus, most substances and sunlight is undoubtedly PVC. The materials are typically very flexible which helps optimize your installation and helps better serve your heat shrink tubing purposes. The application of heat shrink tubing will help ensure that you’re properly protecting whatever components you are putting together and that you are well prepared in harnessing those same components from harm.

Another issue regarding heat shrink tubing is price. Fear not for we have some general information that will help appease your hunger for knowledge on the subject. For example a price pre foot figure on heat shrink tubing can start at as low as $0.95 per foot on a fifty foot spool. However this is not set to stone but it is a great starting point in what you’ll need to know for any heat shrink tubing applications you plan on performing in the future.
