There are different ways to distinguish welding. One of the main ways by which welding is distinguished is with the type of process by which the welding is carried out. Automatic tungsten inert gas welding is also known as orbital welding. As the name suggests, it takes the help of an inert gas. The process is automated and therefore one big advantage is that all the errors that creep in during manual welding are eliminated. Also this type of welding is well known to carry out repeated operations. You can make sure that the same welding operation is carried out about a hundred times with the same accuracy. This makes great for mass production of welded parts. There are times where you require a superior process to join metals. The first need for this arose with hydraulic lines in aircrafts. A process was developed which involved the use of an arc generated from a tungsten electrode which was rotated around the tubing weld joint of the hydraulic pipes. There was a control system that was put in place that was used to regulate the current. As a result a fully automated system was developed that was more precise and reliable than manual welding process. This process was then implemented into the industries where it was used for mass production. Small power units that were around 110V AC were developed that were compact enough to carry them around from site to site. This helped the construction industry as portable power supply system made it easier for workers to carry around the equipment and reach different construction site to work for different projects. Today, orbital welding is used for a variety of applications. A computerized memory is used so that various welding parameters can be stored for different applications. This way you don’t have to program each and every aspect of the welding process every time. There are certain specifications that would apply for a type of welding process. These would be stored in the memory. Suitable modifications can be made accordingly for a specific welding process that would be required for a specific application. Therefore a large number of identical welds can be created easily and this would help to the numbers of errors that creep in during the manual welding process. The dependency on the skill of a welder to produce error free parts is significantly reduced. However, such a process in the hands of a skilled welder can become perfection. Orbital welding equipment can be used to make high quality welded pieces and this process will emulate productivity, quality and consistency. The same weld can be reproduced hundreds of a time which increases repeatability. This basically makes good for mass production. It can also be used where the rotation of a part is not practical such as when a tube or a pipe is fixed on both ends. Also where there is not enough space available and the size of the welding device is limited, the orbital welding equipment can be easily used.
