What Is The Difference Between A Vps And A Dedicated Server?

By: dwspriya Home | Internet-and-Business | Web-Hosting

Shared hosting is no longer a choice, but a necessity for a perfect web hosting solution. With huge traffic on your website, you will find a few visitors even making SQL requests at the very same time. This further call for an upgrade and your web host now seeks your choice towards making a move to either a VPS or a Dedicated Server.

VPS (or Virtual Private Server) can be opted if you want to shift from shared hosting, and not prefer a dedicated server. VPS also provides you with root level access to the server and is as simple as a shared hosting account. VPS hosting is relatively a cheaper option than dedicated hosting even when you are not responsible for server management. This is because dedicated servers offer you better hardware configurations.

The VPS also serves as a dedicated server with the exception that you own some part of the system server resources including CPU, disk space, RAM, etc, by creating â€layers’. The base has the standard host operating system and then comes the virtualisation layer with a sole-ownership file system and a kernel service abstraction layer, ensuring independency and security of resources amongst varied virtual environments. The virtualisation layer makes the virtual environment with the application or workload, look like an independent server.

Thus, you see the key difference between a VPS and a Dedicated Server is that in the former case, you share the physical resources but can enjoy having a private server, while in the latter case, you own the entire web server yourself. If you are facing certain limitations in your shared account, you may like to opt for a VPS for its number of benefits and cost factor, as compared to a dedicated account, as you might not be in a need to own a whole server. If you are looking for a rapid growth of your website, you can straightaway jump to Dedicated server to avoid moving again at the later stage.
