By: Lisa Wonsey Home | Health-and-Fitness

One day she would be the life of the party, the next - locked inside her bedroom away from everybody. At first Kelly assumed she was just suffering from PMS or a mild case of Depression. Instead of seeing a doctor, Kelly decided to self medicate. She had heard that SAM-e, a nutritional
supplement was effective in helping Depression by balancing neurotransmitters in the brain.
Why not try it?

After taking the supplement, Kelly immediately felt better. She figured her problem was solved, "I was elated that an over-the-counter supplement had saved me a trip to the doctor." Kelly’s sense of relief was short lived, as her behavior became increasing erratic. "I went from feeling good to literally bouncing off the walls." Kelly says she couldn’t sleep or calm down. Kelly’s husband drove her to a doctor the next morning. After given a battery of tests, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. "Many people don’t know the difference
between Depression and Bipolar Disorder," says Dr. Charles Morgan, a psychiatrist who specializes in mental health disorders. "Not knowing the difference can be dangerous." For example, he says a supplement like SAM-e can help some people with Depression; however it can
cause full blown mania in people with Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Morgan added "Bipolar is
misdiagnosed in up to 50% of health cases, because it mimics so many other disorders."
