What Kind Of Treatment Is Available For Panic Anxiety Disorder?

By: Bernie Rose Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

Panic anxiety disorder is a mental condition whereby a patient experiences panic attacks repeatedly. People going through this difficult disease will suddenly have feelings of terror that seems to come out of nowhere. The attacks happen at all times and places and are frequently experienced over and over.

Three million Americans suffer from this disease. Since no one can forecast when a panic attack will materialize, people often have fear waiting for another one to come out of nowhere. It is known to occur much more often in women than in men.

What happens during a panic attack? As mentioned, panic attacks can happen out of the blue, without any clear cause. A panic attack can be confused with a heart attack because they display matching symptoms, such as pain in the chest and palpitations.

No one can predict how long a panic attack will last. Some panic attacks only take a couple minutes, but you never know if the subsequent one will last longer. Panic attacks frequently follow a vicious cycle because after someone has experienced one, they fear having another one, which can actually cause them to receive another one.

There are two separate types of panic disorders:
  • Panic Anxiety Disorder with Agoraphobia -- This group includes people who suffer from having an unreasonable fear of experiencing a panic attack. An overpowering fear of having an anxiety attack prevents these patients from even venturing out of their homes.

  • Panic Disorder Free Of Agoraphobia -- This category is still a serious condition but the affected individual can freely leave their abode without excessive anxiety. The fear is there most of the time, but it is not as crippling as the first type.

Origins of Panic Disorder

What caused me to produce a panic disorder? The exact cause of panic disorder is still not completely understood. Genetics is often to blame for recurrent anxiety attacks. A panic attack can be triggered by experiencing hardship, such as losing your job or house, or some other awful adjustment in your life. Panic anxiety problems may also be related to certain medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, withdrawal from medication, or hypoglycemia. If you have used chalk or cocaine, you are at a higher risk of developing a panic attack disorder.

Conquering a Panic Attack Disorder

Happily, panic attacks are usually treatable. Affected individuals can frequently be helped through cognitive behavioral therapy, but medication may also be prescribed as well as some type of professional counseling. Exposure therapy, which mimics the real sensations of an attack in a secure environment, can be effective in helping a person deal with their panic anxiety disorder.

Panic anxiety disorder can be a devastating disease that gets in the way of you realizing your full capability as a human being. Sometimes this disorder can not be treated, but you should surely try to free yourself from this terrible condition.
