Childrens beds are what they are, aren’t they? Places to put the little ones to sleep in at the end of a busy day. They need to be strong, functional and cheap because they are bound to take a battering. True enough †but really good beds for children can be so much more, a proper investment that will repay its own cost over years of excellent service. Don’t be fooled by the accepted â€wisdom†that all children’s furniture should basically be cheap and hard wearing †go out on a limb with a proper child’s bed and you’ll never look back. To say that childrens beds ought to be hard wearing is certainly true: but that doesn’t mean they have to be cheap, or ugly. A lot of kids beds certainly aren’t pretty †they’ve obviously been built with the idea that they’re going to be ruined anyway, so they might as well not worry too much about looks. And people wonder why kids hate going to bed! The silly thing is, there are plenty of beds for children out there that tick all the boxes both from the parent’s and the child’s point of view †it’s just a case of making the effort to go and find the things. What makes good childrens beds, then? Strength and durability (not to mention easy cleaning) are taken as read. The rest is about engagement †engaging the child’s mind in the same way that his or her toys and books do. Children dislike going to bed because bed is boring †but if their parents have looked at beds for children that do more than just give them somewhere to sleep, they’ll have a base, a plaything, a place where their imagination is allowed to run wild at the end of the day. Modern childrens beds come in all sorts of wonderful shapes and themes †space ships; boats; jungles; princess’ castles. Name it †there’ll be a bed for it, if children like it. Why battle every night with a bored child who doesn’t find the same stimulation from his or her night time environment as they get from their daytime activities? Take a look at some really good beds for children and you’ll see immediately why some parents have a lot less trouble getting the little ones to go upstairs at the end of the day than others. There are beds and there are beds †the trick lies in picking the right ones. The choice is out there †it’s simply a case of finding it and making the right decisions. Childrens beds don’t have to be boring and they don’t have to be ugly. Bespoke beds for children are made of quality materials; they don’t cost that much more than the boring off the shelf alternatives; and they make bed time a thing of joy rather than a constant struggle between parent and child. Don’t let the conventions hamper you in your own fight to get the little ones up to bed nice and early †check out some modern alternatives and open up a whole new world
