Since we cannot monitor his every move and it is impossible to stop the baby from crawling or walking around the house as it is important part of his development. It is necessary to practice â€childproofing’ or â€baby proofing’ the home to minimize any unfortunate incident. Some useful tips to make your home a safe place for your child - Reshuffle your drawers: A child loves to go through the things in low lying drawers and areas he can approach. Get rid of all the harmful objects inside those drawers; use them for keeping handkerchiefs, towels, etc. Also remove all small or dangerous things he can put in his mouth. - Rearrange the house: Redo the ambiance of the house. Remove sharp edged furniture, tuck way decoration pieces, and create open space to move about freely. - Lock away dangerous areas: Block the stairways, apply child locks on washrooms, refrigerators etc. The most potential danger lies in electric sockets. Apply a duct tape or close the sockets so that the child cannot poke fingers. You may choose to use socket covers anyway to help prevent your child plugging in appliances that could be dangerous. However, it’s safer to keep appliances out of the reach of your child than to rely on socket covers. - Remove dangerous objects: It is very important to stack the things like cleansers, bleach, chemicals, medicines, alcohol, sharp implements like garden tools, knives, scissors etc. locked away. - Choose the right toys: Don't give toys with small particles as the child may choke on them. At the same time don't give things like strings, polythene bags, or coins to play with as it may lead to suffocation. Always supervise the child and at the same time give him freedom to explore. - Don’t leave the baby unattended: Never leave the kid unattended in a bath. If the phone rings, or doorbell goes, take your baby with you if you have doubts about her safety while she is out of your sight. - Protect your child from Fire: Domestic fires pose one of the greatest risks to children. Children playing with matches and lighters frequently start house fires. Install smoke detectors in every bedroom and one near the kitchen. Check them weekly to be sure they're working, and change the batteries annually. If you have a fireplace, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and have it serviced or checked according to the manufacturer's instructions. Try to make sure there are no items on the mantelpiece that will tempt your child to climb up and reach for. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of your child. Put out and throw away cigarettes properly. Have an escape route planned, and practice it, in case of fire. These useful steps can help you prevent a mishap and let your child kindle around safely.
