By: Andrew Gibson Home |

The Canary Islands or you can say a Spanish archipelago, consists of seven main islands, and one small island, and other small islets. These islands found in the North Atlantic Ocean are of volcanic foundation. They lie on the west coat of Africa.

The islands enjoy constant hot sunny weather throughout the year and have some of the best beaches in Europe. Many often describe the beauty of these islands as paradisiacal.

These sun-drenched islands have a unique exotic flavor of their own. There are hundreds of volcanoes, rich forests, rolling sand dunes and rugged cliffs in the Canary Islands.

Many families come on holiday to the Canary Islands and stay in holiday rentals. There is a great choice of holiday villas and self catering holiday apartments to rent as self catering holiday homes in the Canary Islands.

Once there, you must take a trip to the metropolitan city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, also the capital of the island. Along with the rich culture, the city offers a colorful busy market.

Although the islands are a part of the European Union, they avoid the various European custom/duty charges, thereby, making shopping in the Canary Islands even more pleasurable for the visitors.

One can also study the varied wildlife and marine life of these islands. It is a home to varied plant species, its wild life includes geckos and wall lizards and three endemic species of critically endangered giant lizards.

Its marine life is a mixture of North Atlantic, Mediterranean and endemic species. It has 5 different species of marine turtle including the endangered Loggerhead Turtle.

The Loro Parque in Santa Cruz de Tenrife is one of the world's finest marine and wildlife parks. It showcases a wide range of colorful parrots and various other tropical birds.

Park Las Aquilas Jungle Park in Abona has a wide selection of animals in a healthy environment including the rare white lions. It also offers great scenery and photo opportunities. Its wonderful marine life has led to an increase in the popularity of scuba diving and underwater photography.

If you are looking for some fun and relaxation, you can visit the Siam Park located in Adeje. It has amazing slides and the lazy river is a perfect way to ease and relax. Or you can also visit the Jardin Canario in Las Palmas.

It may be a little difficult to find on your own as the road signs are not very helpful but walking in the peaceful environment of the park outside the noise of the city makes the trouble worth it.

One can also enjoy windsurfing or kite surfing in Fuerteventura's fantastic soft golden beaches. The island has unspoiled beaches with giant dunes. It also hosts world championship events in the south at Jandia.

Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma is an excellent place to go hiking. It is one of the largest and most fertile volcanic craters on Earth. If one is not adventurous, one can simply enjoy the beautiful view offered by the Mirador de La Cumbrecita.

It is believed by some historians that the legendary continent Atlantis was located here. Legends and myths apart, there is no doubt that the Canary Islands is a great place to go on holiday and stay in holiday rentals. Its villas and holiday apartments are great value and allow you to explore the local culture.
