Everyone can get hearing loss and it doesn't matter what your age may be. Hearing loss is commonly very gradual and slow to unfold, as a person loses ability to hear certain sounds and frequency. It should also be noted that permanent loss of hearing is also possible and depends on the gravity of the situation. When you are experiencing hearing difficulties then having yourself checked with a specialist should be your top priority. Tests are performed initially to locate the problem area in order to understand better the problem at hand. Once the problem is found out, if an appropriate hearing treatment exists only then can it be given to the person. Many types of hearing loss can affect a person and it is hard to tell at first what type it is. The hearing loss type depends heavily on where the affected area of the hearing pathway is. As mentioned, hearing loss in some cases are simple and easily treated while others are not so easy to correct. A blockage or problem that arises from the transmission of sound from the outer ear to the inner ear along the middle ear is called conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss covers all parts of sound transmission from the funneling of sound from the outer ear and into the inner ear. Most cases of this type of hearing loss is treated successfully with medication, surgery or can be managed with hearing aids. From one of the easiest types of hearing loss to treat, we go now to Sensorineural hearing loss which is one of the most difficult and challenging type of hearing loss. This type of hearing disorder involves the inner ear part where sound vibrations are converted into signals that are carried by nerves into the brain. The cochlea is very important, as it is the part of the ear that holds nerves and hair hearing cells that processes sounds. When not the ear, but the central nervous system is affecting a person's hearing then this is called central hearing loss. Being afflicted with central hearing loss a person hears great but sounds are just sounds and there is hardly any connection between sounds and meaning. Controlling the environment and making sure there is as little sound as possible is the only way to treat this form of disorder. A condition called functional hearing loss is a person not being able to hear because of psychological reasons. It may be out of this world, but something in the person's mind is blocking and making the person not hear things, all the while having normal hearing. Only the best doctors and specialists can figure out what is troubling a person with this condition. A person is said to have mixed hearing loss, when he or she has both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss at the same time in one or both ears. With mixed hearing loss, the easiest to treat is still conductive hearing impairment. There is still no cure for sensorineural loss however and in the meantime it may be permanent. Ask anyone who has hearing problems and they will be the first to tell you hearing loss can change your life. Everyone should take heed of this warning, as once a person's hearing is gone, it may be gone forever. An annual full body checkup should be performed to avoid problems not just in connection to hearing but in totality.
