What To Expect From Beginner Flute Lessons

By: Pamelina Siow Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

A person who wants to learn to play the flute thinks about whether he should take lessons or just teach himself. Both options actually have advantages and its up to the student to analyze which one is more beneficial for him.

There are two types of learners, one who learns best from personal instruction and is self taught whereas the other type of learner could be a kind of person who learns best from lessons that have deadlines and needs a lot of practice for that.

The traditional way of learning through a teacher enables the student to follow correct instructions and directions from a learned teacher.

Compared to taking formal lessons, self study also has many advantages. If you are teaching yourself, you wouldn't have to think about keeping to a schedule that is not to your liking.

A student has the freedom to form his own time table and have his own pace of learning which is helpful because one may find it difficult to find a good flute teacher with whom you can coordinate well. One may not come across a teacher who is able to teach the particular style of flute playing that you wish to learn or at the required pace, so self learning can be a boon for some.

One can learn to play the flute without formal lessons of any kind. A number of famous flute players attained success without undertaking formal flute lessons. They have taught themselves successfully and made a name for themselves by their own efforts.

An important point about learning from a teacher is that you will only learn and truly excel in playing the flute if you have successfully chosen a qualified teacher.

The teacher has many interesting ways of teaching the lessons that experience has taught them are effective in motivating the students to perform better and learn more quickly.

It is extremely important to find the right teacher as it can make or break the student. Your love for the flute may die forever if you happen to learn it fro the wrong teacher.

For a flute player one must learn to play the instrument by regular practice or playing the flute when one wants to and not necessarily in a fixed time. One has to strike a balance between the two in order to be a good performer.

One can learn best from exercises. They help a student to build his own style of playing. But be sure that you time your exercises so that you don't over practice playing the flute. Too much effort can you tired of the instrument which may negatively affect how you feel about it.

A few have been erroneously informed that just playing by ear is enough, but knowing how to read music is actually more accurate in helping you learn the flute. Apart from all this, one can make a habit of listening to other players, attend flute performances from time to time, try and play different flutes and absorb everything that helps them play the instrument better.
