What To Expect When Your Adult Braces Go On

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Many people have some understandable apprehension about treating their problematic teeth with adult braces. Not only do they feel that braces are only for teens (the "teen braces" misconception), but they are hesitant because they know their lifestyles will change. What should you expect with adult braces? What is the current stigma that exists with adult and teen braces? And what exactly should you expect when those adult braces go on?

In the recent years, more and more adults have gotten braces. A large majority of them are for aesthetic purposes to have beautiful teeth and an attractive smile. There are also a good number who have realized the importance of treating teeth and jaw problems. The misconception of "teen braces" is long gone. Teen braces are just as beneficial to teenagers, as adult braces are to the not-so-young. So, if you decide to have adult braces, you don’t need to cover them when you smile.

As soon as your orthodontist attaches your braces, you are likely to feel a strange feeling of some pressure on your teeth. This may feel unusual at first, but the discomfort is tolerable. If the pressure is giving you too much discomfort, you can pain relievers to lessen it. The unfamiliare pressure usually disappears within a week or two, soon you will barely notice it there at all. Teen braces may be easier to adjust to than adult braces, but remember the discomfort is only temporary.

It is true how braces can affect your everyday life, but only to a certain extent. For one, you will need to mind what you eat, especially during the first few days after your braces are put on. It is best to avoid all hard and crunchy foods such as nuts, those that are sticky, and those that will tend to get particles stuck in between your teeth. It is also best to avoid these even after the initial feeling of pressure has disappeared. This may take a little bit of sacrifice, but this is not too high a price to pay for better looking teeth.

After a two months or so, your orthodontist will ask you to visit for re-adjustment. Readjustments usually entail some pressure, and may sometimes be accompanied with sore gums or discomfort for a few days. Try not to hate this readjustment phase, this is when actual treatment takes place. Your teeth will be subjected to some amount of force which causes some cells to break down and new ones to regenerate. Your teeth will slowly get aligned as the cycle continues.

Many adults give up all hopes of getting straight teeth when they see teen braces with headgear. Headgear can look unpleasant, especially for adults. However, newer style braces do not require headgear. If you would like your adult braces to affect your appearance in the fewest ways possible, there are many kinds of adult braces that you can freely choose from. You see, there is nothing too embarrassing or too unpleasant about braces. Just a little sacrifice and you will get the straight teeth and beautiful smile you always wanted.
