What To Tell Your Child About His/her Food Allergies

By: Protect Your Child From Life-Threatening Food Allergies Home | Home-and-Family

I'm Jane Meagher, creator of Protect Your My Child From Life-Threatening Food Allergies, an innovative and comprehensive video learning system for parents of food-allergic children, and I’m a parent of a child with severe food allergies. Here's a few quick and helpful tips to help you protect your child from the everyday dangers of food allergies.

Today's topic is a few important things your child needs to know about his/her food allergies.

Teach your child to physically recognize specific foods he or she cannot eat and what allergens those items contain, and identify by name the actual prohibited foods, especially for a very young child.

If your child is too young to read ingredient labels and make a safe/unsafe determination, let him or her know which adults are knowledgeable enough to check ingredients to see if food is safe. You might even want to give an example such as "Mommy, Daddy, Grandma Judy and Mrs. Price can check food and tell you if it is safe. But not all adults can do this. I know you love Aunt Sue and Brittany (who might be your child's 14 year old cousin who he thinks of as an adult), but they don't know enough about food allergies so you can only ask the four people I mentioned because those people have learned all about how to know if foods are safe for you. Can you name those four people who can tell you if food is safe for you?"

Also, remember that if your attitude is that you and your child can work carefully and diligently to manage his/her food allergies to make sure he/she can live a healthy life and not miss out on anything, and if you carefully choose both your words and your tone, then your child will also foster a positive, "I can handle this" attitude. If your attitude indicates that it is a hassle and frustration to constantly check for food safety, then your child will grow up believing that having a food allergy is a miserable, unfair
annoyance. So choose positive words and a positive tone of voice.

Focus on what your child CAN do, now what he/she CAN'T do.

I'd love to give you a free video called Ten Critical Things Your Child Needs to Know About His/Her Food Allergies, including a miniscript for answering one of the most common questions food-allergic kids ask, and a great FREE resource you can use to show your child that many other children have food allergies too.
