What You Need To Know About A Lift Truck

By: Rick Martin Home | Automotive | Trucks

Whatever you call it, be it forklift or lift truck, we are basically talking about the same type of machinery. It was invented somewhere in the 1920s and it's been indispensable to industrial activities ever since. As we all know it, any successful operation starts with the appropriate amount of research. When purchasing a forklift, the first thing you need is time.

You need time to prospect the market look around, talk to the right people, get some prices and become at least reasonably oriented. Always ask for any additional details. Consider charging/fueling possibilities, accessories, warranty and brand as factors that may get you paying a lot more than the initial price. Anyway, once you're clear as to what features you're looking for, expect to pay a few extra thousand dollars for each individual forklift and then pick your best option.

If you give a deeper thought to the whole process, it's all a matter of priority. If you have lower funds at your disposal, you can go for an internal combustion forklift which, although cheaper, is unsuitable for indoor use and has a medium life span. An electric forklift, on the other hand, has a higher initial price (the more that we consider all the accessories), but it lasts much longer. It all comes down to how, where and for how long you need to use your forklift.

In any case, if an electric forklift suits your needs but is too expensive, you might want to consider buying it second hand. A used electric forklift will probably have its price lowered down to half (including accessories). You have to ask for all the details just like buying it new, in order to make sure you get all the facilities that the initial buyer also got. Remember, however, that you can't rely on a used electric forklift for too long (both on short term and on long term). It's definitely going to break down eventually, but if it does so too often, it might not be worth the initial low price considering what you'll have to pay for maintenance and repairing. Always remember to calculate the overall costs including the wage of the forklift operator.

Of course, you have always the possibility to lease an electric forklift. Companies prefer this because they have a warranty on the whole period of the lease. However, if you need one on a daily basis and for a medium to long period of time, the situation is the same buying one might be a much cheaper option.

Anyway, there's no better method of determining whether you want or not to buy a certain lift truck than having it operate at your workplace. Most dealers will allow you to use the lift truck in the actual workspace for a time interval ranging between two, three hours and two, three days. This gives you a great chance to get in touch with all its features and ergonomics. It also enables you to include your lift truck drivers in the decision making process. Remember that people who sell forklifts will help you evaluate your requirements by measuring the available space and the weight of a typical load, so feel free to take advantage of every facility.
