By: Clint Jhonson Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Braces have been perceived for a long time to be for kids and teenagers. However, the world of orthodontics have whole-heartedly welcomed the continuous influx of those past the teenage years who want to have straighter teeth and beautiful smiles through adult braces. If you are considering adult braces, there are a few things you need to know about having them and how to live with orthodontic work in general.

Braces are an excellent way to improve your smile and your oral health and hygiene. Adult braces and teen braces serve the same purpose. Braces were not as common ten years ago as they are now. Now that treatment options are available, you can correct many things about your teeth that you don’t like.

Who needs adult braces?
As in teen braces, adult braces are perfect for those who have:
Overlapping or crooked teeth. These situations almost always make it difficult maintain clean, healthy teeth. The crevices usually serve as excellent hiding areas for unwanted bacteria, leading to gum disease and tooth decay.
Protruding teeth or gaps in between teeth. These problems can distract from a nice smile and can cause difficulty in the bite.
Misaligned teeth. Misalignment leads to improper bite, which further leads to jaw problems.

Types of adult braces available:
Just like teen braces, you also have a wide number of options to provide you both the comfort and the style you need. Most adults choose the latest technology. There are many modern braces available which can work more effectively then the older designs. Some brace technologies also work faster, so you don’t have to wear braces as long. Braces are also now available in discreet forms. With discrete adult braces, the brackets will be attached to the back of the teeth.

You may have to wear your braces for at least a year and a half, depending on your teeth problem and the type of treatment administered. Once removed, you may have to keep wearing retainers for a few months more to make sure that your teeth do not go back to its misaligned state. You should expect your braces to be somewhat uncomfortable and sometimes even painful, especially if this is your first experience with orthodontic treatment. The discomfort usually disappears after about a month.

Caring for adult braces
Teen braces and adult braces are also similar in terms of their need for maintenance and cleaning. Whichever form you have, whatever age you are, you need to take good care of your braces. Thoroughly and carefully brushing all the crevices and flossing in between teeth are two of the most important ways you can take care of your braces everyday. It is best that you establish for yourself a routine that you can stick to. You should also be mindful about what you eat and avoid those that are sticky, hard or too large.
