What You Really Need To Learn About Tile Countertops

By: RemodelingBIBLE Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

If you’re looking for a countertop material that’s inexpensive, durable, easy to clean and will positively score serious points in the looks department in no time, then ceramic tile is definitely your best option. A favorite of most average renovators, tiles are completely heat-resistant and can easily endure even the harshest cooking preparations and kitchen fiascos.

Ceramic tiles are made by combining clay, sand and common rock-forming minerals such as dolomite, quartz and feldspar with copious amounts of water until the resulting mixture is transformed into what is called a body slip. The concoction is subsequently dried, pressed and molded into prearranged bisques to give each would be finished product its distinct hardness and strength.

After subjecting the body slip to extreme heat for a second time to make sure that all the moisture has been virtually chucked out, the mixture is then prepared for glazing, a process which primarily controls the weight, firmness, color and thickness of the ceramic tiles.

While a handful of contemporary tile manufacturers still rely on centuries-old traditional glazing techniques, some modern producers incorporate innovative design tools like rotary applicators, fine-mesh silkscreens and electric brushes to raise the bar even higher in the aesthetics department as well as endow the ceramic tiles with a flawless, updated look that caters to the demand of nearly all avant-garde remodeling enthusiasts.

As soon as the glazed tiles or greenware are ready, they are placed inside a rolling hearth kiln for firing and final drying. This procedure causes the tiles to go through a steady cooking process that utilizes extreme levels of heat, reaching over 2100 degrees Fahrenheit in most cases. The heat given off by the kilns are so over the top that the ceramic tiles will commonly shrivel by as much as 15 to 20 percent during firing.

Completed tiles are sorted out by shape, color, size and stability before being put on display in the market. Although the majority of tile factories nowadays rely on automated machines and conveyor belts to do the sorting for them, primeval classifying techniques are still applied in some countries, especially in Spain, Mexico and a few other Hispanic-oriented regions where tile-making is considered as a high form of art.

On the other hand, while ceramic tile countertop owners don’t have to worry about unsightly burn marks, limited design choices and tough cleaning jobs anytime soon, they still have to exert utmost care when working with their tile countertops since these can eventually chip or crack if frequently hit with just the right amount of force.

Besides having a minor chink in their armor, grout lines can also become stained over time and give your countertop a grubby appearance. Likewise, while ceramic tiles are as cheap as you make it and can approximately cost only as much as $10 per square foot, any errors committed during installation can stick out like a sore thumb.

Like all other countertop materials, the ceramic tile has its very own pros and cons. Although it may be advantageous in certain aspects, it can be very poor in some. Just remember, our dear kitchen renovation enthusiast, that all remodeling endeavors involve risks. Once you get the better of those risks, however, your kitchen will definitely earn a celebrity status sooner or later.
