When It Comes To Oil & Fuel, All Liners Are Not Created Equal

By: Shane Carter Home | Business

Almost all liners do not do well with oil or fuel. The common liner in the marketplace will either be eaten up by these forms of hydrocarbons or the hydrocarbons will simply seep through a standard liner. Most liner materials are made out of oil making them homogeneous to liner materials. Most hydrocarbons are also caustic to most standard products in the marketplace even if they are not partially made from oil.

One thing to check for when purchasing a liner that needs to resist hydrocarbons is if there is any warranty from the manufacturer. Many liner resellers will sell any liner product for any application if not pressed on warranty. Some of these resellers do not even know which liners are resistant to oil until they contact the makers of the liner materials. Several resellers don’t even have a liner product that can resist hydrocarbons. The makers of these liner materials normally put their materials through extensive tests to ensure if they are to warranty their product they can withstand a specific chemical breakdown.

Most products that can resist hydrocarbon breakdown contain a product called Evaloy. Evaloy was created by Dupont to prevent hydrocarbons from attacking specific liner materials. This product is quite expensive to make so generally the hydrocarbon resistant products cost upwards of five times the cost of standard materials. The most well respected of these products is Xr5. Xr5 comes with a 10 year exposed warranty against most hydrocarbons. Xr5 also has excellent tear resistance and puncture resistance.

For very caustic Hydrocarbons such as Acryl Butylate may need something even more chemically resistance such as PVDF. These products can cost as much as fifty times as much as the standard liner. These extremely caustic hydrocarbons can destroy almost so this may be the only possibility to contain these types of hydrocarbons.
