When To Use Ground Penetrating Radar Services

By: Brown Kevin Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Before beginning any remodeling or construction project, ground penetrating radar should be used to detect any potential problems with the work site. While there are other means to know what lies beneath the surface of the soil, none are as accurate as this. Here’s why:

* Utility maps are not always kept up to date.

* County or city survey only includes what was recorded.

* Caverns, sinkholes and other underground menaces may not be recorded anywhere.

* Old rubbish burials from decades past may be lurking underground.

* Cisterns and abandoned wells may have been in place before there were records kept.

The entire history of the property may not be documented anywhere and without extensive digging, there really is no other way to know what lies just beneath the surface. Blindly digging is expensive, not to mention downright dangerous in some cases--especially when using heavy equipment. Any utility lines out of place stand a good chance of being ruptured, which is costly and time consuming to repair, as well as being a safety hazard.

Unused underground storage tanks should either have been removed or filled in with gravel, but this is not what always happens. If the property was abandoned before the law went into effect and no one was aware of the tank, it could be sitting under your property causing a potential hazard.

Ground penetrating radar can detect these things when there may be no record of them ever being on the property. Abandoned wells that may be covered with decades of overgrowth and soil are easily found, with no danger to anyone.

Radar Is the Best Way

No one can say with any degree of certainty what has taken place on any piece of property, unless every owner kept complete written records of every detail. Not likely to happen, and in some areas of the country, it is impossible without using radar, to know what is under the first few layers of soil.

Radio and radar waves are pulsed into the ground, and using specialized equipment, the results give an accurate picture of what is under the ground. You will also get a picture of the type of subsoil you have, and any potential problems with the underlying ground to your proposed project. It would be disastrous to erect a building only to have the subsoil erode out from under the foundation. Using ground penetrating radar can help avoid this scenario completely. The uses for this equipment are invaluable before attempting any project, large or small.

Professional services for ground penetrating radar are well trained and licensed in the use of the equipmentâ€"after all, it really is not a do it yourself undertaking. Reading the results accurately takes training, so hiring professionals is the best option. Not to mention the expense of buying the equipment for limited usage is outrageous.

Other Uses

Mineral and gas pockets can be detected as well as other important underground elements not visible from the surface. Ground penetrating radar has been used to find artifacts without damaging them by digging blindly. So while you never know what you may find, at least when using this equipment you will find all there is to know!
