Where To Vacation This Year

By: David Williams 2 Home | Travel-and-Leisure | Vacation

For most people, going on vacation is something that starts when you are just a little kid and your parents take you to your favorite theme park. For my family, this involved two trips to Disney World in Florida, a trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA, several trips to Six Flags in New Jersey and repeated trips to Splish Splash on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. However, as many parents, families and couples are feeling the pinch of a tight fiscal year, it is leaving many people wondering what kind of vacation they will be taking this time around.

Where to vacation has a lot to do with what your interests are as well as what your financial situation looks like. Becoming more popular than ever are stay-at-home-vacations which have come to be known as staycations. Staycations, contrary to popular belief, are a great way to have fun while at the same time getting to know the area that you live in better. Whether you decide to camp out in your backyard or stay at a local bed and breakfast inn for the night, there is no doubt that staying home for once in your life is not going to kill you. In fact, many families who have tried staycations in the past have come to find out that it has brought them all the more closer as they take the time to get to know each other better.

Besides the idea of saving money when you go on a staycation, it also allows the more creative side of people to come through. For instance, you could have a staycation in which you and several of your girlfriends decide to have an old fashioned sleep over party complete with board games, scary movies, manicures and pedicures. Similarly, guys can have a 'guy's night out' in which they go to a local gaming facility or go play golf or ride go karts, etc. There is no age limit or restriction put on having fun. On top of this, you sometimes get to do a lot more with staycations than you would on a vacation that you have taken in another part of the country or world because you are saving a ton of money that would have otherwise been spent on travel expenses such as gasoline, tolls, hotel costs, dining and attractions.

Perhaps, one day, the economy will turn around and right itself again, thus allowing those of us who enjoy traveling to pick back up where we left off. But for now, there is nothing that says you can't dig your bike out of the shed and go for a scenic bike tour through the town or area that you live in. Even if it is something as small as going on a picnic in a local park or visiting a local art museum, you should feel good about contributing to the local markets in your area as well as saving money while having just as much fun!
