Which is safer to drink: bottled water, spring water or tap water? Probably none. Here's why. For the past ten years or so the bottled water industry has been prospering since more and more people are becoming skeptical of drinking water that comes through the kitchen tap. It used to simply be a small number of health minded individuals that primarily drank spring water, but now it is absolutely normal to see anyone drinking it. Chemicals in the Water The bottled water industry began to grow in size as the seemingly endless stream of reports about new contaminants being discovered present in our water supplies continued to pour in. At this point in time there are any number of the industrial chemicals that we use that are present in our drinking water every time that we open the tap. These chemicals ingested over time can take a serious toll. One thing that people don’t seem to understand when it comes to drinking spring water is that what they are drinking more often than not didn’t come from a natural spring. What you are actually drinking is nothing more than filtered tap water, and depending on the method that the bottling company used when they were filtering your water it may not be any safer for you to drink. No Guarantee of Pure Water Everyone has this idea that with bottled water there is some kind of guarantee of purity. The truth is that federal regulations state that bottled only has to be as safe as regular tap water, but it doesn’t have to be any safer. The regulation that the bottlers face is actually more lax than the regulation on the water treatment facilities that provide your water at home. Contaminants Allowed in Spring Water Most people have no idea that there are actually allowable limits for harmful contaminants in the spring water that is sold. Many of the contaminants that this water is allowed to contain are the carcinogenic chemicals that I mentioned a little earlier including Benzine, which has caused a couple of massive product recalls over the years not because it was present in the water, but because there was far too much of it. Plastic Leaching Danger Even if the manufacturer does a thorough job of removing all of the harmful chemical from their bottled water it may still be contaminated by the time that it reaches you. This is because there is a chemical from the process used to develop the plastic bottles will leach off into the water as the product sits while waiting for shipment, or sale. This chemical is also a carcinogen. The Best Water Solution Instead of taking the risk that the spring water that you are drinking may not be as healthy for you as you had hoped you could simply take measures to purify your own drinking water. All that it would take is the purchase and installation of a home water purification system in order for you to be assured that there was nothing in your water that could possibly do you, and your family any harm. Drinking bottled water is not nearly as safe as everyone thinks. See my website for more complete details. -Larry L. Taylor
