The requirements for a dermatologist are a completion of an MD or DO from a recognized school. They must complete an accredited residency program in their particular field. Many boards require a certain level of performance in that specialty. All ABMS boards require the doctor to have an unrestricted license and they must pass a board exam. Even though a doctor has become board certified, the doctor must be re-certified periodically, usually every six to ten years. Most boards now have available a program of Maintenance of Certification which is designed for doctors to maintain knowledge and skills through continuing education. A board certificate shows that the board proved that the doctor has the right amount of training and education, and knowledge and experience in his or her chosen field of practice. The American Board of Dermatology (ABD) is an autonomous group which is the certifying agency for the dermatology specialty. This board works with the Residency Review Committee for Dermatology for the accreditation of residency training programs in dermatology. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is a national professional society specifically for dermatologists. It educates and represents dermatologists regarding dermatology issues and concerns. Membership in the American Academy of Dermatology is not limited to just certified dermatologists. It does include other dermatologists, doctors, providers of health care who have an interest in dermatology.
