Who Dat Nation Finally Gets To Celebrate

By: Frank R. Bilotta Home | Recreation-and-Sports | Football

What better way for the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans to kick off Mardi Gras in a couple of weeks then to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. The Saints came into the game as the underdogs against the high powered Indianapolis Colts offense led by NFL offensive MVP Peyton Manning.

Heading into the game most of the attention seem to focus on the Colts and their key players and not too much about the Saints even though both teams came in 1st in their conferences. Even ESPN sports analyst praised the Colts Peyton Manning and how much he means to game and how another Super Bowl win could propel him into legendary status as arguably the best to ever play the game. People seemed to forget about Saints quarterback Drew Brees and the huge numbers he put up this year while leading the saints to 13 straight victories to start the season and wins over the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs to make it to the Super Bowl, but Brees did make sure people will not under estimate him again.

Once the kickoff started both teams seemed ready for a game that they have been working so hard for all season long to finally take place. In the first quarter it seemed as though the Saints offense was trying to get a feel for how the colts defense was going to adjust since Colts pro bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney was playing on a torn up ankle. Meanwhile the Colts offense came out firing as always and took a 10-0 lead going into the second quarter and the game looked like it could get out of hand. But the Saints started to click at the end of the second quarter as they were able to put 6 points up on the board and closed out the half trailing 10-6.

The Second half however belonged to the Saints starting with an onside kickoff that they recovered. That play turned out to be the biggest turning point in the game, not only did it awaken the players on the field but also the entire Bourbon St in downtown New Orleans and rest of WHO DAT nation. With the momentum in their favor the Saints quickly scored and took a 13-10 lead. But not to be outdone the Colts put together a long drive and took the lead again 17-13 before the Saints closed out the third quarter with a third 40+ yard field goal from kicker Garrett Hartley and trailed the Colts by one heading into the fourth quarter.

When the fourth quarter started in seemed like the game would come down to the last team with ball, but the Saints took the led on 2 yard touchdown catch by tight end Jeremy Shockey and a two point conversion that had to be reviewed by the officials with a little over 5 minutes left in the game. After that you could see everyone in attendance was expecting Manning to walk the Colts down the Field and score but Saints cornerback Tracy Porter jumped in front of a Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. Manning did get one last chance to bring his team back but they were unable to score on a 4th down with less than a minute left when Manning’s pass bounced right off the hands of his favorite target Reggie Wayne in the end zone giving the Saints the ball back and the victory.

For a city that has been through the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and years of fans wearing bags over their heads to games, this was for them and all of the other Saints faithful fans that stood by the team for 42 years and only 2 playoff wins in franchise history. Finally they are able to rejoice in the moment of being Super Bowl champions thanks to Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees.
