Whooping Cough is a bacterial infection of the lungs which is caused by a bacterium Bordetella pertussis.

It is a very infectious disease which causes coughing with little or no fever. The coughing may be so severe that it leads to vomiting and ambition.

Pertussis is an acute, highly infectious respiratory disease characterized by coughing that ends in a loud whooping motivation.

Symptoms of Whooping Cough

Early symptoms of the whooping cough may be mild and comprise a runny nose, dry cough, and low-grade fever.

Within a few days, symptoms get worse and coughing becomes severe in fits or episodes of coughing that can last up to one minute.

During the episode of coughing the face can turn into red or blue (cyanosis) due to a lack of oxygen.

The episodes of coughing are follow by the hallmark whooping sound a person makes when out of breath for air.

Treatment of Whooping Cough

Whooping cough treatment for babies younger than 3 months involves hospitalization, to decrease the chances of them developing serious complications. Often older babies are also admitted to the hospital.

Infants are typically treated in separation to prevent the broadcast of illness to others. In the hospital, an infant will (most likely) be given intravenous antibiotics to treat the infection.

In adding up to these, corticosteroid drugs may also be agreed to lessen airway swelling. In cases where an infant's breathing is labored, his/her airway may be suctioned to extract mucus that is blocking it.

Home Remedies for Whooping Cough

Honey - Add a tablespoon of honey to a glass of boiling water and drink as desirable. This will give a restful outcome to the throat and will help to cure whooping cough fast.

Ginger - 10ml of ginger juice with equal amount of honey may give relief to whooping cough, you may take it two times daily.

Calamus - A pinch of the powder of the roasted calamus can be given with a teaspoon of honey.

This will give relief in whooping cough to the patient. Being antispasmodic, it prevents stern bouts of coughing. For lesser children, the dose must be proportionately smaller.

Licorice Root - Take 5 grams of Licorice Root and powder it. This can be taken three times daily with honey.

You can also make a decoction by using teaspoon of pulverized root to one cup of water, and drink three cups daily.

Castor Oil - You may take castor oil by mixing it with cow's milk. This will help you treat whooping cough fast.
