Why Good Home Lighting Is So Important

By: Kathryn Dawson Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Often lighting is the last thing to be considered when designing a home. It is in fact a very important part of the overall feel of the house and getting it wrong can be disastrous. There is a lot to think about when it comes to lighting. For example what the room is to be used for will affect the type of lighting you need. Whether the room needs atmospheric lighting can alter your choices too. It is not just the inside of the home that needs good lighting either. The garden or outside area can greatly benefit from some good quality lighting and will enable you to enjoy the space with friends and family. Security lighting is another factor that needs considering when planning the home lighting as this can act as a good deterrent to thieves. This article discusses home lighting and why it is a good idea to plan everything out correctly.

Task lighting is invariably going to be needed in the home. This kind of lighting is used in the kitchen and the bathroom most often because these are the places where the majority of â€tasks†are carried out. Whether it is chopping carrots, cooking a curry or applying makeup, good task lighting is absolutely essential. In the kitchen you need bright lights over the counter tops and over the cooker too. Often houses have large open plan kitchens or kitchens with a table in for eating from. In these cases you don’t want bright task lighting on all the time. During meals or when you are simply relaxing in the room you are going to want a calmer, more atmospheric glow. The ideal solution is having bright task lighting with dimmer switches. When you need a lot of light they can be turned up high, and when you need only a little light they can be turned right down.

The same method works well in bathrooms where task lighting is just as important as atmospheric lighting. The additional consideration to make in bathrooms however is the high level of water and moisture in the room. That means lighting especially designed for bathrooms should only be used as any other type of lighting could be dangerous. Bedrooms and the sitting room also need good home lighting. Task lighting may be necessary in various spots throughout each although more thought needs to be put into the design of the lights used. Sitting rooms are used for entertaining, so you do not want large, garish lights displayed. Instead it is a good idea to choose lights that blend in with the rest of the decor. Standing lamps make excellent task lighting and offer the added bonus of being stylish and attractive. These can work well in both sitting rooms and bedrooms. A bedroom will need good bedside lights for reading and if there is a desk in the room, investing in a good quality table lamp is also worthwhile.

In the garden, lights can really make the space come alive. Having lights in the trees and lights near to a table will ensure you can eat outside all year round (subject to the temperature of course!) Another aspect of outside lighting is for security purposes. Having a light that comes on when there is motion nearby can be a very effective deterrent for anyone wishing to break into your home. Being lit up, the house can be clearly visible from all around and this makes it much less likely to be targeted by burglars. Interior lighting can also work as a good security measure. Leaving a few lights on around the home that are clearly visible from outside makes the house appear to be occupied so think about this when planning your home lighting too.

With so much to think about when it comes to home lighting, it is important you make a good plan. Security lighting and all interior lighting is important to both the look and feel of the house and of course for security purposes.
