Why Sales May Be The Right Career Choice For You

By: Paul J. Meyer Home | Business | Sales

Isn't it interesting that we always seem to have enough lawyers, enough taxi drivers, enough mechanics, enough plumbers, enough builders, and enough politiciansâ€But there are simply never enough salespeople!

I'm certainly not trying to offend anyone in the above mentioned professions; I am merely trying to make one thing crystal clear. There is ALWAYS room for more professional salespeople. Always!

No matter where you go, companies, charities, businesses of all kinds are desperate for creative, self-motivated salespeople. That's because nothing happens anywhere until somebody sells something! The growth of any enterprise, its profits, the return on investments, the very life of a company depends on its sales force. It's not complicated at all; it's actually common sense.

The businesses of the world need salespeople who know how to sell!

Selling Is The BEST Job In The World!

With selling the door of opportunity is always open, the ladder is always up, and the sky is the limit! You determine how far you want to go; the goals you desire to reach. In fact, the highest price paid for any form of ability in the world is for a master salesperson with a creative imagination!

Phil Knight is the man who turned an unknown company called Blue Ribbon Sports into the Nike Corp., a multibillion-dollar enterprise and a household name. He has also made more money from athletics than anyone, ever. With a net worth of more than $7 billion, Knight ranks high on the Forbes list of the richest Americans.

What you may not know is Knight began his rise to the top by selling his own shoe brand, originally called Onitsuka out of the back of his green Plymouth when he was just 26 years old. He was convinced his inexpensive, high-performance shoes could beat the top "sneakers" (Adidas, Converse All-Stars, and Keds) in the market at that time.

Blue Ribbon Sports cleared only $3,240 in 1964, its first year. In 1971 the name of the shoe was changed to Nike, meaning the Greek winged goddess of victory and debuted at the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. The name change was the result of a suggestion by an employee who said the idea came to him in a dream. The company then paid $35 to commission a new logo, which resembled a fat checkmark and was dubbed a "swoosh."

Later Knight met and convinced Michael Jordan, probably the greatest status symbol among youths at that time, to endorse the Nike label. As a result, in fiscal year 2006, Nike's revenue surpassed $15 billion.

All because Knight knew how to sell!

You Are Not Stuck!

I've met any number of people that were highly educated for their chosen profession. Many really enjoyed their careers but a greater number felt stuck, bored, and financially limited. Let's face it; most "jobs" have a ceiling. And many of them are routine. Not the stuff of high inspiration.

Let me suggest that you get over the notion that you have to stay stuck in a specific field because you've obtained a professional degree. If you're no longer excited and passionate about what you do, it's time to change. If you want more out of life in every way, I have a recommendation. Choose selling!

A dear friend of mine, Bernard Rapoport started with nothing. He chose a business where he could use and develop his sales skills. He went on to build a large insurance company, selling exclusively to union members. He sold it for tens of millions and continues to give away millions each year to charity. He chose selling!

People who can sell are in high demand. They will always have a job. No other profession allows the broad range of options that selling offers. Only you decide your limits, no one else. Whatever your interests, you can find the perfect match when you choose selling. It's lucrative, creative and satisfying. And it's fun!

Now Is The Time

In fact, there has never been a better time to be a salesperson than today. Companies are desperate to increase sales, to overcome the present market. Opportunities are endless, and with the technological advances, you can even create a product in your garage and sell it world wide the very next day! You certainly couldn't do that when I was a kid.

I started out as a very inexperienced salesman with a life insurance company, the 57th company I interviewed! I had been turned down by a full 56 companies prior to landing that starter job. I was determined to prove I could sell; and slowly over time I increased my sales and commissions in a dramatic way. The hundreds of millions of dollars I've made in the decades since that humble beginning have all come as a direct result of one thing: Becoming a master salesman!

Are you motivated? Creative? Determined? Do you have a large vision and an appetite to accomplish your goals? Then choose selling. Only with selling can you actually dream big and make those dreams come true.

Those who can sell will always be the highest paid, regardless of their occupation. The businesses and organizations that will change the world will be the ones who have master salespeople working for them.

There's literally no position or profession on earth that can produce the income generated by selling. None. Remember: With selling the door of opportunity is always open, the ladder is always up, and the sky is the limit.

See you at the top!
