Many people wonder why jewelry is so important and what started people wearing jewelry in the first place, do people wear diamonds to signify wealth, or is it as a decoration to our bodies which will make us more beautiful? For which ever reason we wear jewelry, there is no denying the great pull and allure it has on people in today's society. If we look back in history, we see that there were signs of jewelry as far back as the times of cavemen, where we see bones through noses as well as stones and feathers adorning peoples bodies. Romans were covered in jewels and gems in order to establish a social standing and a symbol of their wealth, while Egyptians wore many different charms with specific meanings. In these olden times, jewelry was generally worn as talismans and protective symbols which were designed to ward off evil and attract good influences. Although these reasons are still behind people wearing jewelry in today's world, we now see many more people wearing jewelry for aesthetic, beauty and fashion as well. There are numerous reasons why people wear jewelry today, different types of jewelry are seen all around the world and are worn for reasons including religion and medical id. Many items of jewelry that are worn today hold special and sentimental meaning to the owner. Prime example of such jewelry is the wedding ring. As well as wearing a wedding ring which is a symbol of unity between a couple, there are engagement rings, eternity rings and promise rings. These all have a very personal and individual meaning as well as being a sign to others of a special bond and commitment you have with another. Talismans are worn to protect against bad influences and to ward off evil, many cultures have such items of jewelry which hold superstitious beliefs and are worn with very serious and cultural connotations. Religious symbols are often worn as jewelry to prove faith and to reassure the wearer as well as to comfort them in times of trouble. Crosses are worn by many Christians as well as many patron saint symbols such as the St Christopher (Patron Saint of travellers) worn by many to keep them safe on journeys. As well, as the many deep and meaningful reasons why people wear jewelry, there are of course the basic reasons that jewelry is worn by millions on a daily basis which are fashion, beauty and accessory. People like to adorn themselves with jewelry that compliments certain outfits and adds a unique aspect to their person. Jewlery comes in multitudes of shapes, sizes, prices and standards, all of these are worn to create beauty and interest to peoples wardrobes purely because the allure of jewelry has been present in our lives for thousands of years, and is unlikely to fade for many years to come. People will continue to be attracted to delicate, chunky, expensive or handmade pieces of beautiful of jewelry in all walks of life no matter what their reason may be.
