A wish pearl is a gift of a pearl oyster sealed in a can, with a pearl growing inside it. The oyster is usually between 2 and 5 years old, and has been steadily growing the pearl for that period of time. The gift may be opened immediately, or kept for a short while - the conditions in the can are calibrated to mimic the oyster's natural environment. When ready, the recipient of a wish pearl is expected to make a wish, then open the can and reveal the oyster. The oyster when opened, will reveal one or more pearls.
