Women Brave Maryland Long Term Care Costs

By: Rhys Anderson Home | Finance | Insurance

As Maryland long term care costs continue to go up, women are doing their best to secure a health care plan for their future. As a matter of fact, top insurance providers claim a big percentage of women Marylanders comprised the new sales of long term care insurance (LTCI) policies in 2010.

Mostly women from ages 55 to 64 purchased LTCI policies according to the records of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. The number of new male purchasers, on the other hand, is very small because men by nature rely on their spouses for care, but women have no one to depend on when it’s their turn to need care.

Most residents in nursing homes situated in Maryland are women. As a matter of fact there’s 68% of them while male residents only make up a little over 20% of the total population of nursing homes.

According to the Genworth Financial 2011 Cost of Care Survey, the median annual rate of a private room in a Maryland nursing home is $89,972 while a semi-private room is $82,855.

Although Marylanders would prefer home care, some of them have acquired a condition which requires 24/7 monitoring and administering of medicines. Assisted living facilities do not offer 24-hour monitoring so it is not an option.

Elderly folks who are currently receiving care at home are spending $23 per hour for a home health aide and the same amount for homemaker services, which would amount to $46 per hour.
