You can also use a soft non stretch cloth and then lay the cloth over your measuring device. Please do the following: Sit down on a chair and relax your leg bent at a 90 degree angle. Then measure your calf around the widest part of your leg approximately 2-3 inches below your knee. Ensure the tape measure is neither tight nor loose on you when measuring. Place your order for a boot size that is a 1/4" to 1/2" bigger than what you have measured your calf as. For example, if you measure your calf as 14-1/2" - 14-3/4" then buy a a 15 inch calf size.
