Wood Floors Through The Centuries

By: Quinlan Murray Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Living in a technological era characterized by a rapidly developing environment, constant innovations and impressive inventions, what is our attitude towards traditional valuable discoveries, and what meaning might their survival have? This article is devoted to outstanding quality and long durability of oak and ash floors, which decorated royal palaces in the past, which have survived up to nowadays and which are now widely available for creating a more pleasant and comfortable atmosphere in homes and offices of people around the globe.

Solid wood floors have a strong advantage over other types of floors and their price is significantly lower than other flooring surfaces from the short and long term perspective. The reasons are explained below.

Solid woods floors vs. marble

People have different tastes and it would be a mistaken consideration to underline that wood is better than marble or vice-versa. Both of these beautiful natural materials are appreciated internationally, and when choosing a floor surface, objective characteristics of both of them should be evaluated.

Solid wood floors are much easier to maintain in comparison to marble which may be easily broken and damageable. In addition, marble requires excessive and constant maintenance works. Once installed, solid wood floor lasts for centuries without the necessity of difficult maintenance. In case a solid wood board is damaged by chance, it is very easy and cost-effective to replace only that specific wood board. In case after 30 years the solid oak or ash floor starts showing first damage marks, they may be easily, rapidly and cheaply repaired by sanding, and you floor will be as a new one again!

Solid wood floors vs. carpets and rugs
Carpets and rugs provide a beautiful and colourful decoration to a room, but nowadays, they are usually produced using synthetic materials, but if natural wool is used, the prices are often too high. In addition, occasional dirt marks may be impossible to eliminate making a carpet look constantly dirty, or, alternatively, being necessary to replace, buying a new carpet again. Carpets collect dust, are not hygienic and may cause allergic reactions.

Have you ever thought that carpet-style designs may be worked out in different solid wood types? Have you ever though that in addition to having a natural and hygienic solid wood floor boards you can integrate a beautiful composition of your choice, including texts, drawings, logos and coats of arms, turned into a wooden masterpiece by highly professional carpenters? Exclusivity, durability, high quality, minimum maintenance, better prices these are the benefits of solid oak and ash floors.

Solid wood floors vs. laminate and engineered floors

Some people say that there is no difference in installing solid wood floor or laminate, that they look in the same manner, with the only difference that laminate costs less. Well, if these really were equal alternatives, than the prices would be very similar. However, curiously, if we compare pricing on a 30-year scale, solid ash and oak floors do outperform and do cost less than laminate floors. Laminate is easily damageable, and one does not need to be an expert to distinguish laminate from a solid wood floor. Undoubtedly, solid wood floors make your property more beautiful and one installed, solid wood floor will not need to be ever replaced - it lasts for centuries! Don't forget, that solid ash and oak adds a great value to your property, and it may be the right choice to install these types of floor even before selling a house.

Regardless new inventions of modern types of flooring, solid wood floor still occupies top positions for the best flooring choices around the globe. However, it is important to note that advanced modern technology for producing solid wood floors is more efficient than in the past, making it possible to significantly reduce prices of a final product, thus making it available to everyone!
