You Can Create An Interactive Map Easily Too

By: Ko Fai Godfrey Ko Home | Computers-and-Technology

Clickable, interactive digital maps have become an integral part of many websites for companies who want to display location and geographic-related information to their visitors.

With the popularity of flash maps and related map applications, creating interactive maps are not the forte of only professional graphic designers or web programmers.

Many online web tools and desktop mapping software are available to help non technical users to create interactive map in flash format. With these software tools, even if you have no prior experience in programming, you can still create an attractive, interactive map to show locations of offices, design routes of upcoming journeys, highlight a special area with mouseover effects, popup information box and so on.

Designing interactive maps using these types of software gives a different result from Google maps, which are sometimes too complex and crowded with information that may not be suitable for every business. Most people don't like potential visitors to know that their competitor is operating a street near their building, and in many cases a company would prefer to use a custom made map matching the design style of its homepage.

Map software allows users to include only the information they want customers to see, and also easily customize its color theme, background, and level of details to show.

Pre-designed map templates will also let non-technical users to add photos or illustrations as backgrounds of interactive flash maps. If you have any specific image, such as a JPG image from your digital camera, it can be put in the background to increase map's appeal.

Ready-made templates provides users of all levels to easily work their way through, such as using icons to pinpoint a location, and use lines and arrows to showing routes or indication of special destinations. Users can also choose from a range of color themes and font settings so to create a customized interactive flash map according to their needs and existing website style.

Once the map is created, users can easily integrate them by leveraging software's web publishing function, which usually provides different options including publish as a flash map (with interactive function), or as static image for you to embed the map into your word document or powerpoint presentations.

Map making is easy now and users can choose from a range of web services or software available in the market. Most software offer free trial version which helps you to make evaluation and decision. Prices of software can be checked on the websites. But cost should not be the only factor as quality matters the most if you are a non technical user trying to create a map on your own.
